1878-2020 NGC PF-70 1 oz Gold Morgan's Eagle UHR Reverse Proof Design - Smithsonian Collection

George T. Morgan is renowned for designing the Morgan Dollar, one of the world’s most iconic dollar coins. 

However, within the Smithsonian® archives lies a rare 1878 Gold Pattern Coin, struck by the U.S. Mint to explore Morgan’s design as a $10 Gold Eagle. Known today as Judd-1582, this pattern coin is preserved in the National Numismatic Collection.

In 2020, the Smithsonian® authorized the release of limited-edition silver and gold proofs, marking the first-ever recreation of Morgan’s $10 Gold Eagle in Ultra High Relief Piedfort Reverse Proofs.

The Design

The design replicates George T. Morgan’s original design with few adaptations.

The obverse features Lady Liberty's left-profile bust, wearing a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is split and flanks the effigy. At the bottom rim, read: “1878-2020.”

The reverse depicts an eagle with spread wings, holding an olive branch in the right talon and three arrows in the left. Accompanying engravings refer to the motto IN “GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “EAGLE” at the bottom.

The design elements imprinted on both sides surpass the coin edges because of the ultra-high relief.

An NGC PF-70 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), which operates independently of sovereign mints, appraises and certifies coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are frosted, contrasting with the brilliant images engraved. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
