1873 NGC MS-61 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin – Open 3

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin stands as one of the most iconic and historically significant gold coins ever produced by the United States Mint. First introduced in 1849 following the California Gold Rush, these coins were struck for mass circulation through 1907 and quickly became a cornerstone of American commerce and wealth.

Designed by James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the Liberty Double Eagle contains .9675 troy ounces of gold and reflects the artistry and ambition of 19th-century American coinage. In 1873, an important design modification was made when the original “Closed 3” in the date was deemed too similar to an “8,” prompting Chief Engraver William Barber to introduce a revised Open 3 logotype to eliminate confusion.

While more available than the Closed 3 variety, the 1873 Open 3 Liberty Double Eagle remains a prized Pre-1933 gold issue with enduring numismatic appeal. SD Bullion proudly offers 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins – Open 3, certified and encapsulated by NGC as MS-61 examples.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains .9675 troy ounces of gold;
  • Struck in .900 fine gold;
  • Certified MS-61 by NGC;
  • Issued by the United States Mint;
  • Features the Open 3 date variety;
  • Pre-1933 U.S. gold coin;
  • Holds $20 USD face value with legal tender status;
  • Displays Lady Liberty on the obverse and the Heraldic Eagle on the reverse.

The Design

The obverse features a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty adorned with a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY.” Thirteen six-pointed stars surround her portrait, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies, while the year 1873 appears below in the revised Open 3 logotype that distinguishes this variety from its earlier counterpart.

The reverse showcases the powerful Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, a national shield displayed on its chest, and arrows clutched in its talons. An olive branch is also present, symbolizing peace. The eagle holds a banner reading “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is positioned above. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “TWENTY D.” complete the reverse design.

An NGC MS-61 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is a globally respected third-party grading service that evaluates coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

A grade of MS-61 (Mint State) indicates a coin that has not been circulated but may display diminished luster, clusters of noticeable contact marks, and visible hairlines. Despite these characteristics, MS-61 coins retain strong historical integrity and collectible value.
