1873 NGC MS-60 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Open 3
The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was produced from 1849 to 1907 for mass circulation, and it contains 0.9675 troy oz of gold. Its design, featuring Lady Liberty on the front and a majestic eagle on the back, was created by James B. Longacre, the U.S. Mint's fourth Chief Engraver.
In 1873, the original dies for the Gold Double Eagle coins presented the number "3" in a narrow font that could be mistaken for the number "8." Therefore, Chief Engraver William Barber ordered the production of a new logotype with an Open 3 to avoid confusion.
Though less rare than the "Closed 3" version, the 1873 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin "Open 3" is still a cherished piece of American coinage history.
At SD Bullion, you can find 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins from those imprinted with an Open 3, sealed and certified by NGC MS-60 samples.

An NGC MS-60 Coin
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an independent third-party service that appraises and grades coins based on the Sheldon Scale. This scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.
An MS-60 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin, still displaying mint luster and no traces of wear. However, there is a heavy concentration of hairlines, large areas of scuff marks, and poor eye appeal.
