James B. Longacre, fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, was responsible for the elegant profile of Lady Liberty designed on the obverse and a majestic eagle on the reverse.

The Design

On the obverse side, Lady Liberty is adorned with a tiara inscribed "LIBERTY." Her bust is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original Thirteen Colonies, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom edge.

The reverse portrays the Heraldic Eagle with spread wings clutching arrows in its talons. The national shield is on its chest, and the banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is in its beak. 

The artistry is also inscribed with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value of "TWENTY DOLLARS."
