1851-O NGC AU-55 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

Issued between 1838 and 1907, the Liberty Head Eagle served as the United States’ official $10 gold coin before being replaced by the Indian Head series. 

The Liberty Eagle coin is composed of 0.4837 Troy oz of gold. Therefore, many were lost to government-mandated melts during the 1930s economic crisis, making well-preserved specimens increasingly scarce. 

These coins feature a timeless neoclassical design by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, standing as a lasting symbol of America’s rich numismatic and monetary history.

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse consists of a left-profile portrayal of Lady Liberty, enhanced by a coronet engraved “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars surrounding the image represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance is inscribed at the bottom.

The Heraldic Eagle, depicted on the reverse side, carries the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The coin is also engraved with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D,” and the “O” mint mark.
