1847-O NGC AU-55 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

The Liberty Head Eagle was minted by the U.S. Mint from 1838 to 1907 as the nation’s standard $10 gold coin, preceding the Indian Head design. 

Each coin contains 0.4837 Troy oz of gold, and many were melted down during the economic crisis of the 1930s, significantly reducing the number of surviving examples. 

With its enduring neoclassical design by Christian Gobrecht and nearly 70 years in circulation, the Liberty Eagle remains a cornerstone of 19th-century American coinage.

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust is enhanced by a coronet engraved “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars surrounding the image represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance is inscribed at the bottom.

The reverse depicts the Heraldic Eagle carrying the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The coin is also engraved with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D,” and the “O” mint mark.
