1845-O NGC AU-53 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

The Liberty Head Eagle was the U.S. Mint’s official $10 gold coin from 1838 to 1907, before the release of the Indian Head Gold Eagle. 

Containing 0.4837 Troy oz of gold, many of these coins were hoarded and melted during the financial turmoil of the 1930s, leaving fewer examples for today’s collectors. 

The coin’s design is signed by Christian Gobrecht, the Mint’s third Chief Engraver, and their long production run and historical importance secure their place in America’s gold coinage heritage.

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust, depicted on the obverse, features a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance is inscribed at the bottom.

The reverse showcases the Heraldic Eagle, whose depiction includes the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

The coin is also engraved with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D,” and the “O” mint mark.

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) appraises and grades coins from various sovereign mints worldwide using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

AU-53 stands for Almost or About Uncirculated and describes a coin that shows slight wear on more than half of the design and very minor softness on the highest points.
