1843-O NGC AU-53 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

The US Mint produced the Liberty Head Eagle from 1838 to 1907 for widespread circulation as the official $10 coin of the United States, preceding the Indian Head Gold Eagle. 

The coin’s 0.4837 Troy oz of gold content led to a hoard and meltdown during the 1930s crisis, severely reducing the number of samples available in the numismatic market.

Their long mintage, featuring a neoclassical design by Christian Gobrecht, the U.S. Mint’s third Chief Engraver, and their historical role, make them a significant piece of America’s gold coinage legacy. 

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust with a coronet engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” The thirteen stars represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance is displayed at the bottom.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle’s depiction includes the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches on its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed on a banner above the eagle. 

It also features the engraving “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s face value inscribed as “TEN D,” and the “O” mint mark.
