Liberty Eagle gold coins were the circulating $10 coin in the US from 1838 to 1907 when they were replaced by the $10 Indian Head Gold Coin.

During the economic collapse of the 1930s, several Liberty Eagle Gold Coins were confiscated, hoarded, and melted down because of their gold content, corresponding to .4837 oz of actual gold. That severely decreased the number of Pre-1933 Gold Coins available in the market.

The Design

The design of the $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin was created by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the US Mint. 

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY." Her effigy is surrounded by thirteen stars, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies, along with the year of mintage.

The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle, which bears the national shield on its chest, arrows and oak branches in its talons, and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" on a banner above.

Encircling the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TEN D.," indicating the coin's face value.
