The Design

The 1 oz Gold Libertad features the eleven Coats of Arms used throughout Mexican history.

The current seal is encircled by “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” and its previous versions. In all of them, the same design elements symbolize the Independence effort through the symbolic Eagle defeating the foreign rattlesnake.

The Winged Victory on the reverse is the reproduction of a 17-foot statue atop the monument dedicated to the national independence in Mexico City. 

The image is complemented by the engravings “1 ONZA ORO PURO” and “LEY .999,” which stand for weight, metal content, purity, and the year of issuance. The “M” refers to the mintmark.

Gold Libertads that were minted between the years of 1981 and 1990 are minted with 0.90 pure gold. All Gold Libertads that are minted in 1991 and after are minted with 0.999 pure gold.
