The Liberty Head Gold Coin, minted from 1849 to 1889, represents the artistry and spirit of 19th-century America. 

Serving as the official U.S. dollar coin from 1849 to 1854, it was designed by James B. Longacre and contained .0483 troy ounces of gold. 

Longacre’s third design for the Gold $1, known as the Indian Princess, was a refined version of his earlier Type II. Due to design intricacies that led to minting errors in Type II, Longacre introduced a new portrayal of Lady Liberty in Type III, offering improved clarity and detail.

The Design

The obverse showcases the Indian Princess design, which portrays Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress, the same as type II. However, correcting type II deficiencies, Longacre came up with a larger head for Liberty.

The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the headdress, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surrounds the bust. It is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum.

The reverse design remains the same. It features the coin’s face value and year of issuance encircled by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
