The Liberty Head Gold Coin was the official dollar coin in the US from 1849 to 1854. The US Mint crafted them with James B. Longacre’s design and .0483 Troy oz of gold content.

James B. Longacre created several coin designs. Three of them were stamped in the $1 Liberty Coin. The Type II is known as the Indian Princess design due to the portrayal of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Because of the intricate image, their coinage presented errors, and the coins needed replacement.

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the headdress, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” encircles the bust. The image is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at that time.

The reverse design showcases the coin’s face value and year of issuance surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
