The Design

The original 100 Franc coins portrayed Emperor Napoleon III. A redesign featuring "Guardian Angel" was issued in 1878. 

The guardian angel standing right writes the French constitution on a tablet settled on a cippus. The tablet is flanked by a column supporting the hand of justice and a rooster.

Accompanying inscriptions contain Augustin Dupré cursive signature and the engraving “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.”

The reverse displays the coin’s face value, surrounded by a closed oak wreath. It is encircled by the engravings “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ.”

The coin’s edge is engraved with the Latin DIEU * PROTEGE * LA * FRANCE. This embossed edge "DIEU * PROTEGE * LA * FRANCE" was struck until 1906, when it was replaced by "** LIBERTE * EGALITE * FRATERNITE" following the separation of church and state.
