The Obverse Design
The US Mint reproduced Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design in the obverse of the American Gold Eagle Coin.
Lady Liberty‘s march forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizes the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right, in Roman letters.
The “W” mint mark from the West Point branch is beneath the year of issuance.
Reverse Design Type 2
The new reverse design pays tribute to the 35 years of the American Eagles Program. Jennie Norris depicted the majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and highlighted hooked beak.
The inscriptions are the same as the original design. They correspond to the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," the nation’s name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," while "50 DOLLARS 1 OZ. FINE GOLD" describes the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content.
