The US Mint first released the Gold Buffalo in 2006. The American Gold Buffalo coin is the first 24k gold bullion coin in the US, with a USD 50 face value, legal tender status, and an iconic design.

The Design

The obverse design is inspired by the Indian Head Nickel coin, created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. The Native American Chief’s right profile combines traces of Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons.

The inscription “LIBERTY” is on the front of the Native’s forehead, while the year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.

The reverse design, which names the coin, showcases the American Bison in an upstanding position, resembling a Buffalo. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are engraved above the animal with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

A second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is engraved near the Buffalo’s muzzle. The bottom rim describes the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
