From 1849 to 1854, the Liberty Head Gold Coin was the standard dollar coin in the United States, containing .0483 Troy oz of gold and designed by James B. Longacre. 

The $1 Liberty Coin underwent three different design changes over the years. The Type II version, often called the Indian Princess design, depicted Lady Liberty on the obverse. Due to the complexity of the design, these coins frequently had minting errors, leading to their eventual replacement.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty’s depiction is adorned with a fanciful feathered headdress inscribed “LIBERTY.” It is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum then.

Her bust is encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” 

The reverse features the coin’s face value and year of issuance, surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
