The Obverse Design
The obverse was created by Adolph A. Weinman to be imprinted on the 1917 Half-Dollar coin and rescued in 1986 by the American Eagle Program.
The design portrays Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak branches on her left arm, and a stretched right arm for a welcome sign.
The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is aside, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
The Original Reverse Design
The first reverse design was signed by the US Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
It depicts a heraldic eagle with wings outstretched and a shield adorned with stars across its chest. It holds a banner in its beak inscribed with "E Pluribus Unum" and grasps arrows and olive branches in its talons. Above the eagle, thirteen stars symbolize the original colonies.
The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the reverse design.
The New Reverse Design
Emily Damstra designed a new reverse design in 2021 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Program.
The design features the Bald Eagle perching on a branch with its open wings.
The engravings are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” referring to the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content, separated by stars and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
