NGC/PCGS MS-70 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin - Random Year
The American Gold Eagle premiered in the bullion market in 1986. The US Mint started producing silver and gold bullion coins after the approval of the Coinage Act of 1985, which established the American Eagle Program.
US Gold Eagles are the official gold bullion coins in the US made of 22k gold, with an actual gold content of 1 Troy oz.
These coins hold legal tender status and carry a face value of 50 US dollars.
The coin’s designs are a celebration of the basic values established by the Founding Fathers in the US Constitution.
Today, you can purchase 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins from SD Bullion, certified as MS-70 coins by either NGC or PCGS, of varied mint years, randomly selected at the time of shipping.

The Obverse Design
The obverse features Lady Liberty marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. It is a reproduction of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design.
The march symbolizes the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right, in Roman letters.
Reverse Design Type 1
The original reverse design features a family of Bald Eagles. A female Eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest.
The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is on top, and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” flank the image. The coin’s weight, metal content, and face value description are at the bottom and read: “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS.”
Reverse Design Type 2
In 2021, to celebrate the 35 years of the American Eagles Program, the US Mint released a new reverse design created by Jennie Norris. It showcases the majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and highlighted hooked beak.
The inscriptions are the same as the original design. They correspond to the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," the nation’s name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," while "50 DOLLARS 1 OZ. FINE GOLD" describes the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content.
An NGC or PCGS MS-70 Coin
Third-party services, like the PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, work independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins based on their condition using the Sheldon Grading Scale.
The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70. For both services, an MS-Mint State designation means that a particular coin has the same format as a business coin for widespread circulation. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
