The US Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle coins in 1986, offering investors four different size varieties: 1 ounce, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.
The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle is a 22k gold coin with legal tender status, a face value of 25 US Dollars, and the iconic Saint Gaudens design.

The Obverse Design
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design, in which Lady Liberty marches forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch.
The march symbolizes the nation's progress in search of peace and enlightenment. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the upper rim. The Capitol Building is on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right.
Reverse Design Type 1
The reverse design initially imprinted on Gold Eagle coins showcases a family of Bald Eagles. In the image, a female eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male one perches their nest.
The word “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved on top, and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are aside. Weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom, described as “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.”
Reverse Design Type 2
The US Mint released a new reverse design in 2021. It was created by Jennie Norris to celebrate the 35 successful years of the American Eagles Program. Norris’ design showcases the majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and highlighted hooked beak.
The same inscriptions from the original design are repeated in the new one.
An NGC or PCGS MS-69 Coin
The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company work independently from sovereign mints appraising and proving grades to coins according to the Sheldon Grading Scale.
For both services, an MS-Mint State designation means that a particular coin has the same format as a business coin, which remained uncirculated. Grade 69 is attributed to almost perfect coins with unnoticeable flaws.
