NGC/PCGS MS-65 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year
The $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin was issued by the US Mint from 1839 to 1908. Composed of 90% pure gold, these coins were minted for everyday use, held legal tender status, and carried a face value of $5.
However, the economic downturn of the 1930s caused gold prices to soar, culminating in President Roosevelt's Confiscation Act and the widespread melting of gold coins for their intrinsic value.
Today, at SD Bullion, you can purchase $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coins from varied mintage years, graded MS-65 by either NGC or PCGS, randomly selected from our stocks.

The Design
Christian Gobrecht created the $5 Liberty Half Eagle design, which differs from other gold bullion coins because it was struck in two types: a rare “No Motto” version, released from 1839 to 1865, and the “With Motto” version, issued from 1866 to 1908.
The obverse features Lady Liberty in a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet with the word “LIBERTY” engraved on it. The image is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is at the bottom rim.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield on its chest, olive branches, and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
Those coins called “With Motto,” produced from 1866 on, included the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” in a banner above the Eagle.
An NGC or PCGS MS-65 Coin
PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are internationally recognized third-party services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins from 1 to 70.
An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.
