NGC/PCGS MS-64 $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin Type III - Random Year
The US Mint produced the Liberty Head Gold Coin, struck from 1849 to 1889, to serve as the official dollar coin for widespread circulation.
It contains 0.0483 oz of gold and features the Indian Princess design by James B. Longacre, which captures the craftsmanship and essence of 19th-century America.
This design, in particular, corresponds to an update to his earlier Type II. The intricate design of the Type II led to minting errors, prompting Longacre to create a new, more refined depiction of Lady Liberty for the Type III version. It was introduced 7 years after the coin’s first release and produced for over 30 years thereafter.
Today, SD Bullion offers $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins Type III graded MS-64 by NGC or PCGS, with varied mintage, randomly selected from our inventory at the time of shipping.

The Design
The obverse depicts the Indian Princess, which portrays Lady Liberty wearing a fanciful feathered headdress, but, to address type II deficiencies, Longacre enlarged Liberty's head.
The headdress is inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” encircles Liberty’s effigy. The image is inspired by the Venus Accroupie or Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum at the time.
The reverse design is untouched. It features the coin’s face value and year of issuance surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.
An NGC/PCGS MS-64 coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) are renowned third-party services that appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
For both services, MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as business circulation coins. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects, but with attractive overall quality.
