The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was the official U.S. $2.50 coin in circulation from 1908 to 1929. 

The U.S. Mint produced it alongside the $5 Indian Head Half Eagle, which shares a similar design. The quarter eagles, containing .12094 ounces of gold, were minted at the Philadelphia and Denver branches.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ pupil, the sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, created the design.

The obverse portrays a Native American chief’s close-up depiction wearing a full headdress encircled by thirteen five-pointed stars. It also contains the word "LIBERTY" and the year of issuance.

The reverse depicts a Bald Eagle perched on an arrow wrapped with an olive branch. The eagle is flanked by "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the left and "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the right, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" at the top and the coin’s face value, "2 ½ DOLLARS" at the bottom.
