The US Mint struck $1 Liberty Head Gold Coins from 1849 to 1854 as the nation’s official circulating gold dollar. Each coin contains .0483 troy oz of gold and features a design created by James B. Longacre.

Throughout its production, the $1 Liberty Head coin was issued in three distinct designs. The original Type I version was struck for only six years before being replaced by the Indian Princess design, making surviving Type I examples relatively scarce and highly desirable among collectors.

The Design

The obverse depicts a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” Thirteen stars surround the portrait, representing the original thirteen colonies.

The reverse displays the denomination “1 DOLLAR” and the year of issue within a wreath, encircled by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

An NGC/PCGS MS-61 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) are leading third-party grading services that evaluate and certify coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

For both grading services, an MS (Mint State) coin is an uncirculated specimen struck in the same format as a business-strike coin. A grade of 61 indicates a coin with diminished mint luster that may exhibit clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
