NGC GEM Proof 1 oz French Washington Before Boston Gold Medal
The Paris Mint honors George Washington’s accomplishments, particularly his historic march to Boston, by issuing striking gold medals that reflect Monnaie de Paris’ exceptional craftsmanship and artistry, including this 1 Troy oz medal struck in .999 fine gold.
This tribute recalls the events after the siege of Boston, when General George Washington informed the Continental Congress of his victory over General Howe and the British evacuation of Boston Harbor.
The following day, John Adams proposed awarding Washington a gold medal for his leadership, which led to the first Congressional gold medal being presented to a soldier and the first Comitia Americana medal being commissioned.
Today, SD Bullion offers 1 oz Washington Before Boston Proof Gold Medals, certified by NGC as GEM Proof.

The Design
The obverse features a portrait bust of George Washington, shown in his military uniform before the American Revolution. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions: “GIORGIO WASHINGTON SUPREMO DVCI EXERCITUM ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS” and “COMITIA AMERICANA,” translating to “George Washington, Supreme Commander of the Armies, Defender of Liberty, The American Congress.”
These same inscriptions appeared on the very first Congressional gold medal ever awarded—the Comitia Americana medal—authorized by the Continental Congress on March 25, 1776, to recognize Washington’s decisive leadership in compelling the British to withdraw from Boston.
The reverse presents Washington on horseback alongside his troops, highlighting his leadership during the opening phase of the Revolutionary War. The inscription reads: “BOSTONIUM RECUPERATUM XVII MARTII MDCCLXXVI,” meaning “Boston recovered on March 17, 1776,” commemorating Evacuation Day, when British forces retreated from the city during the American Revolutionary War.
