The $100 Union George T. Morgan Proof Gold Round pays tribute to Morgan's essential role in American coinage history.

George T. Morgan was one of the most important coin designers of the US Mint. To this day, the Morgan Dollar, which circulated from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, remains one of the most popular coins in the United States.

This Gold Round, weighing 5 Troy Oz of 99.9% fine gold, was issued in 2010. Morgan’s design imprinted on it was part of the US Mint’s 19th-century plan to strike $50 and $100 proof gold coins, denominated the Half Union and the Union, respectively. None of them were ever struck.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a cap and seated on a rock with wheat stalks near her. She holds a scepter and an olive branch. A sailing vessel is imprinted on the background image. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, and “1876,” the year Morgan designed it, is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with stretched wings and holding a shield and arrows. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are atop.

According to NGC - Numismatic Guarantee Company, GEM Proof equals Proof-65.
