The Design
Goldback Notes designs showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue.
The design presents “Libertas”, the personification of liberty, at the historic Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869. She is depicted driving the final blow into the golden spike, commemorating the completion of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad and its lasting impact on transportation, communication, and commerce.
“Libertas” wears a belt featuring the Utah state seal, while hidden UV details reveal the outline of the Utah state flag around her arm and a California gull, Utah’s state bird, flying overhead. A steam locomotive travels along the tracks behind her, inspired by the historic Jupiter locomotive, with a star replacing its original number as a symbol of the occasion's significance.
The “50” denomination is inscribed near “UTAH GOLDBACKS,” with the gold weight and content noted at the bottom, along with the inscription “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.” — Leviticus 25:10.
The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring them.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback, also known as a foil note, is a voluntary regional currency used for trade and payment in select areas of the United States.
While not considered legal tender, Goldbacks hold intrinsic value as bullion, thanks to the layer of 24-karat gold carefully embedded within a durable polymer film.
Resembling traditional paper money in shape, each note’s denomination, ranging from 1/4 to 100, corresponds directly to the precise amount of gold it contains, from 1/4000th troy ounce up to 1/10th troy ounce.
