The Utah Goldback Note was first launched in 2019 under the Utah Legal Tender Act, beginning a series that has delivered new gold-backed notes each year. 

In addition to new American States, the series now offers a wider selection of denominations, revamping previous alluring designs and introducing new ones that pay tribute to each state's unique culture and heritage.

Goldback notes are beautifully crafted, voluntary local currencies made from 24-karat gold, accepted by some merchants in select U.S. states for their intrinsic and perceived value, even though they are not considered Federal legal tender.

The Design

It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue. 

The design presents “Devotionis”, the personification of devotion, inspired by the perseverance and faith of Utah’s pioneer settlers. She stands before the Salt Lake City Temple, holding a Bible and a basket filled with beets, potatoes, and corn—crops associated with the early agricultural efforts of settlers in the valley.

A native cottonwood tree rises behind her, featuring the word “Deseret” carved in the historic Deseret alphabet. Under UV light, its English translation is revealed, adding a hidden connection to Utah’s linguistic heritage. A beehive hangs from the tree’s branches, symbolizing industry, community, and perseverance, while honeybees surround Devotionis. l.

The design brings together faith, hard work, community, and perseverance to represent the spirit of devotion that helped shape Utah’s early history. 

The inscription “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great.” — D&C 64:33 reinforces the note’s central theme, while the  “5” denomination is inscribed near “UTAH GOLDBACKS,” on top.

The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.

Goldback Notes

A Goldback or a foil note is a voluntary regional currency accepted as payment in specific locations within the United States. 

These notes are not legal tender. However, they are valued as a bullion item because of the 24k gold paint applied to a plastic film. 

Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in weight from 1/1000 oz to 1/10 oz, and their denominations, which can range from 1/4 to 100, are proportional to the amount of gold they contain.
