The Design

It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue. 

The design portrays “Patientia”, the personification of endurance, as a pioneer woman pushing a handcart through the rugged landscape of Emigration Canyon. 

The scene pays tribute to the handcart companies that traveled through the canyon on their journey toward the Salt Lake Valley during the mid-1800s, highlighting the determination and perseverance required to overcome such difficult conditions.

Western meadowlarks soar above the trail, symbolizing hope and guidance, while sego lilies, Utah’s state flower, bloom in the foreground as emblems of survival and peace. 

The “1/2” monetary denomination is engraved beside “UTAH GOLDBACK.” The note’s weight and metal content are at the bottom, beneath the inscription “They shall walk and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31, reinforcing the note’s central theme of enduring through adversity.

The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.
