This piece is the 25 South Dakota Goldback, which contains 1/40th Troy Oz of 24k gold and an alluring design that presents South Dakota’s most emblematic symbols.

The Design

It is standard for all Golback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue on the obverse side and its mirrored reflection on the reverse.

The South Dakota 25 Goldback Note presents Laurea, which translates to “laurel,” referring to the laurel wreath given to champions or winners of competitions. This female embodiment of Laurea has a peaceful expression as she holds a basket near a river. 

The “25” denomination is on top, beside the note’s origin description, while the metal content information is at the bottom.

A Goldback is a regional currency accepted as payment in restricted locations within the United States. These notes are accepted at locations in Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and South Dakota. 

Goldback notes hold no dollar legal tender. However, as they are made from .999 pure gold paint applied to a plastic film, they are valued as a bullion item. 

Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in size from 1/1000th oz to 1/20th oz, and their denominations can vary from 1 to 50, proportionally to the amount of gold they carry.
