Goldback Notes are voluntary local currencies in specific US states. Utah released its first Goldback notes in 2019, followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and, recently, South Dakota.

These notes are devoid of dollar legal tender and are accepted at the vendor's discretion based on the monetary denomination they hold.

This South Dakota Goldback is a 10-denominated note containing 1/100 Troy Oz of 24k gold and an alluring design featuring Harmonia, the Greek goddess of harmony.

The Design

It is standard for all Golback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue on the obverse.

The South Dakota 10 Goldback Note presents the virtue of Harmonia, the Greek goddess of harmony, surrounded by some animals like birds, a dog, and a deer, ready to shoot a bright arrow from her bow.

The “10” monetary denomination is on top, beside the inscription “SOUTH DAKOTA GOLDBACKS.” The note’s weight and metal content are at the bottom.

As these Notes are very thin, the reverse side has no design of its own, being a reflection of the obverse.

A Goldback is a regional currency accepted as payment in restricted locations within the United States.

Goldback notes hold no dollar legal tender. However, as they are made from .999 pure gold paint applied to a plastic film, they are valued as a bullion item. 

Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in size from 1/1000th oz to 1/20th oz, and their denominations can vary from 1 to 50, proportionally to the amount of gold they carry.
