Gold Aurum South Dakota 1 Goldback Note (24K)
The Aurum Mint presents the 5th strike of its Goldback Notes Series: the South Dakota 1 Goldback Note.
Goldback notes are voluntary spendable currency containing 24k gold, accepted in specific states across the US. While they lack legal tender status on the Federal level, vendors may accept them based on their monetary denomination.
The first Goldback premiered in 2019 in Utah. Since then, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and recently South Dakota have imprinted their 5-set Goldback notes.
This note, in particular, is the South Dakota 1 Goldback, which contains 1/1000 Troy Oz of 24k gold.
Product Highlights
- Contains 1/1000 oz of 24k gold;
- Bears a 1 denomination;
- Do not hold Federal legal tender status;
- Housed in proper currency sleeves;
- The 5th strike of the series;
- The obverse presents Pax;
- The reverse reflects the obverse design.
The Design
It is standard for all Golback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure representing a virtue. The South Dakota 1 Goldback Note presents Pax, which in Latin translates to peace and refers to the embodiment of the Roman goddess of peace.
In the image, a mountain ranges on the backdrop while Pax, surrounded by several animals, holds five rings.
The “1” monetary denomination is on top, beside the inscription “SOUTH DAKOTA GOLDBACKS.” The note’s weight and metal content are at the bottom.
The note displays design elements on the obverse, keeping the reverse blank and only mirroring what was imprinted on the obverse.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback is a voluntary regional currency accepted as payment in certain locations within the United States. Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and South Dakota are states that have issued goldback notes.
These notes hold no dollar legal tender. However, they are valued as a bullion item because of the 24k gold paint applied to a plastic film.
Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in weight from 1/1000th oz to 1/20th oz, and their denominations, which can vary from 1 to 50, are proportional to the amount of gold they contain.
