The Design

Goldback notes feature a female figure representing a specific virtue. The Idaho 5 Goldback embodies Clementia, the virtue of mercy, gentleness, and care. The design depicts Clementia planting new saplings in the burned land following the Great Fire of 1910, symbolizing hope and renewal. A young fawn represents the return of life, while an empty patera reflects compassion and mercy.

The note’s artwork commemorates the resilience of Idaho’s forests and the state’s role in shaping early conservation efforts. The engraving “Beauty for ashes,” from Isaiah 61:3, appears above the gold weight and content at the bottom of the note. The denomination “5” is displayed near “IDAHO GOLDBACKS.” As with all Goldbacks, the reverse mirrors the obverse design.
