The Design

The Idaho 1/4 Goldback Note features Justitia, the Roman personification of justice and a traditional emblem of fairness, balance, and impartial judgment. She is typically depicted with a blindfold, scales, and a sword, symbolizing neutrality, the weighing of evidence, and the enforcement of law. Her presence on this note reflects the virtue of justice as an essential element of Idaho’s cultural identity.

Justitia stands before a detailed rendering of Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America, shaped by the Snake River. Surrounding her are elements representing Idaho’s natural beauty, including the syringa, the state flower, and the monarch butterfly, the state insect. The “1/4” denomination appears beside the inscription “IDAHO GOLDBACK,” while the weight and purity are clearly noted at the bottom near the phrase “Judge righteously.”

As with all Goldbacks, the reverse side reproduces the same design in mirror form, maintaining structural consistency while keeping the focus on the obverse artwork.
