The Design
Every Goldback note features a feminine allegorical figure representing a specific virtue. The Idaho 1/2 Goldback honors the virtue of Pietas, meaning devotion, depicted through the historical figure Sacagawea. Born near Lemhi Pass, she played a pivotal role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, guiding and interpreting while carrying her young son as a sign of peaceful intent. Her reunion with her brother, Chief Cameahwait, in 1805 enabled the expedition to obtain the horses needed to cross the Bitterroot Mountains via the Lolo Trail.
On this note, Sacagawea stands as a symbol of steadfast devotion and maternal strength. She is surrounded by imagery tied deeply to Idaho’s landscape, including the Bitterroot Mountains, Lolo Creek, and native wildlife. The “1/2” denomination appears beside “IDAHO GOLDBACK,” while the weight and purity are inscribed along the bottom beneath the phrase “Everything I do is for my people.” The reverse mirrors the obverse artwork, consistent with all Goldback designs.
Goldback Notes
Goldbacks are foil-like notes made by layering 24-karat gold within a durable polymer substrate. They are used as a voluntary currency in select regions and are valued for both their bullion content and artistic presentation. Each denomination corresponds directly to its gold weight, offering a flexible and visually striking way to accumulate fractional gold. Idaho joins Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arizona in issuing these uniquely crafted notes.
