The Design

It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue. 

The design portrays “Abundantia”, the personification of abundance, among the vineyards of Sonoma Valley, one of California’s historic wine-growing regions. She holds clusters of ripe grapes, symbolizing the prosperity cultivated through generations of dedication, patience, and careful stewardship.

A California quail appears nearby, representing the state’s natural beauty and diversity, while hidden UV artwork reveals a ladybug associated with good fortune. In the distance, Mission San Francisco Solano adds a historic element to the scene and connects the design to California’s early heritage.

The “5” denomination is inscribed near “CALIFORNIA GOLDBACKS” on top, while the engravings regarding weight and metal content are at the bottom, along with the inscription  “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” 

The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.
