Gold Aurum 24k California 1 Goldback Note
Introducing the California 1 Goldback Note, from the Aurum Mint’s Goldback Series.
Every Goldback is crafted from 24-karat gold and functions as a voluntary medium of exchange, accepted by participating merchants in select U.S. states. Although they are not federally recognized as legal tender, businesses may choose to accept them for their gold content.
First introduced in 2019 with the Utah Goldback under the Utah Legal Tender Act, the series has since grown to include several American States, a wide range of denominations, and stunning cultural and historical designs.
The California 1 Goldback Note, containing 1/1000 troy ounce of 24k gold, is currently available for purchase at SD Bullion.

The Design
It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue.
The design portrays “Diligentia”, the personification of diligence, as a female prospector panning for gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California. She holds a gold nugget in her hand, while hidden UV details reveal additional gold beneath the water, capturing the excitement surrounding the 1848 discovery that sparked the California Gold Rush.
The scene pays tribute to the Forty-Niners whose pursuit of opportunity transformed California’s population and economy and helped shape the state’s early history. A grizzly bear appears in the background, referencing the iconic symbol featured on California’s state flag and representing the determination and frontier spirit associated with the Golden State.
The “1/4” monetary denomination is engraved beside “CALIFORNIA GOLDBACK.” The note’s weight and metal content are at the bottom, beneath the inscription “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” — Benjamin Franklin.
The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback or a foil note is a voluntary regional currency accepted as payment in specific locations within the United States.
These notes are not legal tender. However, they are valued as a bullion item because of the 24k gold paint applied to a plastic film.
Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in weight from 1/4000 oz to 1/10 oz, and their denominations, which can range from 1/4 to 100, are proportional to the amount of gold they contain.
