The Design

It is standard for all Goldback Notes designs to showcase a feminine figure symbolizing a particular virtue. 

The design portrays “Justitia”, the personification of justice, against the dramatic backdrop of Yosemite National Park, featuring Half Dome and El Capitan. She raises the scales of justice to represent fairness, balance, and the equal application of law. Hidden UV details reveal water filling the scales, symbolizing the continual effort required to preserve justice and liberty.

In her other hand, “Justitia” holds a gavel over a stack of books, representing wisdom and the legal principles that support a just society. California poppies appear throughout the scene and adorn her crown, connecting the design to the Golden State, while California dogface butterflies symbolize transformation and renewal.

The “1/4” monetary denomination is engraved beside “California Goldback.” The note’s weight and metal content are at the bottom, beneath the inscription “To delay justice is injustice.”

The note displays design elements on the obverse, leaving the reverse blank and mirroring only those on the obverse.
