The Design
Goldback notes traditionally feature a female figure representing a specific virtue. The Idaho 10 Goldback embodies Perseverantia, the virtue of perseverance, illustrated through the story of Silver City during Idaho’s silver rush in the 1860s. The design depicts a miner resting beside a cart of ore in the Owyhee Mountains, reflecting the endurance and resilience required to thrive in the demanding mining environment.
The artwork highlights Silver City’s growth from a remote camp into a thriving community, with landmarks like the Idaho Hotel symbolizing its development. Additional details reference Idaho’s abundant natural resources, including local gemstones. Though Silver City eventually declined, it remains preserved as a reminder of the hard work and determination that shaped the state. The denomination “10” appears near “IDAHO GOLDBACKS,” with the gold weight and content noted at the bottom along with the passage “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial” from James 1:12. As with all Goldbacks, the reverse mirrors the obverse design.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback, also known as a foil note, is a voluntary regional currency used for trade and payment in select areas of the United States. These beautifully crafted notes are currently issued in Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Idaho.
While not considered legal tender, Goldbacks hold intrinsic value as bullion, thanks to the layer of 24-karat gold carefully embedded within a durable polymer film.
Resembling traditional paper money in shape, each note’s denomination, ranging from 1/4 to 100, corresponds directly to the precise amount of gold it contains, from 1/1000th troy ounce up to 1/10th troy ounce.
