French 100 Franc Gold Coin Avg Circulated - Random Year

French 100 Franc Angels are among the most impressive and sought-after large European older gold coins.

Introduced in 1855 as the highest denomination gold coin in France, the gold 100 French Francs coin was produced continuously for about 80 years. 

They weigh 32.25 grams and are struck with a purity of 21 carats of gold bullion, these coins contain 29.03 grams of pure gold and are similar in size to the U.S. $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens double eagles.

Their remarkable rarity is attributed to their very low original mintage. Only 458,082 coins were minted for the entire series, with an annual production ranging from just 10,000 to 30,000 coins.

The Design

The original 100 Franc coins featured the portrait of Emperor Napoleon III. A redesign was issued in 1878 featuring "Guardian Angel." 

The guardian angel standing right writes the French constitution on a tablet settled on a cippus. The tablet is flanked by a column supporting the hand of justice and a rooster.

The engravings on this side contain Augustin Dupré cursive signature and the engraving “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.”

The reverse features the coin’s face value surrounded by a closed oak wreath. It is encircled by the engravings “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ.”

The coin’s edge is also imprinted. It contains the Latin inscriptions DIEU * PROTEGE * LA * FRANCE. This embossed edge "DIEU * PROTEGE * LA * FRANCE" was struck until 1906, when it was replaced by "** LIBERTE * EGALITÊ * FRATERNITE" following the separation of church and state.
