NGC/PCGS MS-62 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year
The US Mint issued the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin from 1839 to 1908. These coins are 90% pure gold, produced for widespread circulation, holding legal tender status, and a denomination of USD 5.
The economic collapse of the 1930s led to high inflation of gold prices and eventually to the Confiscation Act during President Roosevelt’s government and to a popular practice of melting gold coins for their content.
Thus, the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins are highly treasured by investors and collectors who appreciate their numismatic value, especially samples graded by internationally recognized third-party services, like the NGC and the PCGS.
Today, at SD Bullion, you can purchase $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold coins from random years, graded MS-62 from either NGC or PCGS.

The Design
Christian Gobrecht created the $5 Liberty Half Eagle design, and it differs from other gold bullion coins because it was struck in two types: a rare “No Motto” version, released from 1839 to 1865, and the “With Motto” version, issued from 1866-1908.
The obverse features Lady Liberty in a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet with the word “LIBERTY” engraved on it. The image is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and has the year of mintage at the bottom rim.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield on its chest, olive branches, and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
Those coins called “With Motto,” produced from 1866 on, had the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” included in a banner, which appears above the Eagle.
An NGC or PCGS MS-62 Coin
The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are internationally recognized third-party services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins according to their condition at the moment of appraisal within particular grades.
The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
Grade 62 indicates that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas, noticeable scuff marks, and below-average planchet quality. But acceptable overall appearance.
