The reverse, signed by Aleysha Howarth, features the Australian opal's design in brilliant blueish hues, depicting a horse.

It includes the inscription “YEAR OF THE HORSE,” the Chinese horse character, the “P” mint mark, marigold, a plant traditionally considered lucky for those born in the Year of the Horse, and a customized pattern on the outer rim.

Engravings describing weight, metal content, fineness, and the year of issuance are also present.

Because it is a proof coin, the surfaces exhibit a brilliant lustre, highlighting the opal's colors on the reverse and the frosted design elements on the obverse.
