The U.S. Mint is innovating the numismatic market with the debut of captivating gold coins and a silver medal series honoring DC’s most famous superheroes. 

Working alongside Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the Comic Art Coin and Medal Program highlights comic book artistry as a defining part of America’s creative heritage.

This remarkable series honors the legendary heroes whose stories embody lasting themes of valor and national pride. The first one is Superman™ and his civilian identity, Clark Kent™, enduring symbols of courage, resilience, and unwavering determination.

This medal, in particular, is a 2.5 oz silver sample, produced at the Philadelphia Mint, in .999 fine silver. It was purchased from the US Mint on the first day of their official release and submitted for PCGS grading.

The Design

The medal’s artwork was created by Joseph Menna, former DC artist and current Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, whose initials also appear on the piece.

The obverse features Superman™ soaring above the Kent family farm. The sun shines over the fields that nurtured young Clark Kent™, symbolizing both his upbringing under his adoptive parents and the powerful energy source behind his extraordinary abilities. The design is accompanied by the inscription “LIBERTY.”

The reverse depicts a young Clark Kent standing beside his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, on their farm. Clark gazes upward as a plane passes overhead, while Jonathan looks thoughtfully into the distance. This side includes the inscriptions “SUPERMAN” and “HOPE AND STRENGTH.”

A PCGS MS-70 “First Day of Issue” Sample

According to PCGS, a “First Day of Issue” coin is one purchased from its original mint on the very first day it was publicly available for purchase.
