In partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the Comic Art Coin and Medal Program recognizes comic book art as a cornerstone of American culture and imagination.

This extraordinary collection celebrates the heroic figures who reflect the nation’s enduring ideals of strength and patriotism. Leading the series is Superman™ and his alter ego, Clark Kent™, timeless icons of bravery and perseverance.

This premiere release, produced at the Philadelphia Mint without a mint mark, features a traditional one-ounce medal and a larger 2.5 troy oz version struck in .999 fine silver. They were purchased from the US Mint on the first day of their official release and submitted for NGC grading.

The Design

The illustrations imprinted on the medal were designed by Joseph Menna, DC’s former artist, and now a U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, whose initials are engraved as well.

The obverse portrays Superman™ flying over his human family farm. 

The Sun nurtures the farmland where a young Clark Kent™ was raised by his adoptive parents and is the primary source that fuels his incredible powers. The accompanying inscription is “LIBERTY.”

On the reverse, the young Clark Kent with his human father, Jonathan Kent, are on their farm as Clark watches a plane fly overhead, and his father looks on in the distance. It also contains the inscriptions “SUPERMAN” and “HOPE AND STRENGTH.”

An NGC MS-70 “First Day of Issue” sample

Third-party services such as NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) use the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, as a standard for grading coins worldwide.

For NGC, a “First Day of Issue” coin is a sample purchased from its original mint on the first day of its official release and submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State and corresponds to a coin issued in the same format as a widely circulated sample. However, it has never been in circulation, so it shows no signs of wear, tear, or contact with other coins. Hence, the grade 70.
