The Perth Mint of Australia unveils the latest release of its renowned Lunar Series III, celebrating the Year of the Snake in 2025. As the sixth sign of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the Snake governs this year’s design.

The Lunar Series, issued in a 12-year cycle aligned with the Chinese Lunar Calendar, features platinum, gold, and silver coins in various sizes and finishes. 

This particular release is a one-ounce silver coin with a high-relief proof finish. For the first time in the series, King Charles III's effigy is introduced on the obverse.

The Design

The reverse features a coiled snake, accompanied by a Chinese character and its translation, "SNAKE," the year "2025," and a subtle "P" mint mark on the left, signifying the Perth Mint.

The obverse showcases a left-facing profile of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions "CHARLES III" and "AUSTRALIA" at the top, with "1 oz 9999 Ag" and "1 DOLLAR" along the bottom, denoting the coin's weight, purity, metal composition, and face value.

Because of the high relief, the design has a 3-D effect, surpassing the coin's edges. The proof finish provides the surfaces with a mirror-like luster, contrasting with the frosted design engravings.

The Year of the Snake

The Chinese Zodiac cycles through its animal signs annually, with each year associated with a specific creature. The Year of the Snake will reappear in 2025, following its earlier occurrences in 2013, 2001, 1989, and prior years.
