2024-W PCGS SP-70 First Day Of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin - Exclusive West Point Label

American Gold Eagles are some of the most sought-after gold coins available. These 22k gold pieces are the official gold bullion coins of the United States. The US Mint introduced them in 1986 alongside the Silver Eagle Coin as part of the first strike of the American Eagles Program.

The Gold Eagles collection is extensive, featuring 22k gold coins in fractional sizes and a variety of finishes. The blanks used in their minting underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

These specific coins are burnished versions, minted at the West Point branch, and feature the “W” mint mark.

You can find 2024-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles at SD Bullion, taken among those available for purchase in the US Mint on day #1. They are graded as SP-70 samples sealed in PCGS slabs with the Exclusive West Point Label.

The design also features the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” the coin’s mintage year, and the “W” mint mark on the right.

The reverse showcases a close-up of a bald eagle with an intense gaze and a prominent hooked beak. The surrounding text includes “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS,” indicating the weight, metal content, and face value.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

A PCGS SP-70 First Day of Issue Coin

PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a perfect coin with absolutely no flaws.

PCGS considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
