2024-W PCGS PR-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Proof Coin
Introduced in 2006, the Gold Buffalo Coin became the first 24k gold coin issued by the US Mint.
Weighing 1 Troy oz and composed of 99.99% pure gold, its design pays homage to James Earl Fraser's iconic Indian Head motif, which dates back to 1913.
These coins, in particular, feature the “W” mint mark because they were issued in the West Point Mint, one of the US Mint’s branches.
SD Bullion offers 2024-W 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins, sourced from the first day the US Mint made them publicly available, certified as PR-70 coins, and sealed by PCGS.
Coin Highlights
- Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as perfect PR-70 coins by PCGS;
- Produced by the US Mint;
- Issued by West Point and carries the “W” mint mark;
- Among those purchased on day #1 of public availability;
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 pure gold;
- Holds a face value of USD 50, backed by the US Government;
- The obverse features the Native American Chief;
- The reverse showcases the American Bison.
The Design
The obverse features a Native American Chief portrayed through a right-profile bust melding elements from various Native American tribes: the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. It was inspired by James Earl Fraser’s design from 1913.
The engravings on this side correspond to "LIBERTY" above the Chief's forehead, the year of minting, and an "F" representing the artist's initials. The “W” mint mark from West Point is next to the Chief’s nape.
The reverse displays an American Bison, resembling a Buffalo, covering the whole surface. Engravings reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "$50," and "1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD" denote the coin's denomination, weight, purity, and metal content, respectively.
A PCGS PR-70 First Day of Issue coin
PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service works apart from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 depending on their condition.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
According to PCGS, a “First Day of Issue” is a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
