The Design

The obverse design is inspired by James Earl Fraser's portrayal of a Native American Chief. It features a right-facing profile melding elements from various Native American tribes: the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. 

Inscriptions including "LIBERTY" above the Chief's forehead, the year of minting, and an "F" representing the artist's initials complete the intricate design. The “W” mint mark from West Point is next to the Chief’s nape.

The American Bison stamps the reverse side. Its resemblance with a Buffalo names the coin. Engravings adorn the design, reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "$50," and "1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD," denoting the coin's denomination, weight, purity, and metal content, respectively.

Because it is a proof coin, the blank background surface exhibits a brilliant luster, while the design elements imprinted have a matte appearance.
