The US Mint introduced Gold Buffalo Coins in the numismatic market in 2006 as the US’ first and official 24k gold coin.

Containing 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold, Gold Buffalo coins reflect the nation’s heritage through the inspired James Earl Fraser’s Indian Head design from 1913.

These coins, in particular, are Gold Buffalos purchased from the US Mint on day #1 of their official release and submitted to PCGS appraisal. They were certified as MS-70 samples and sealed with 1 of the 100 Gold Foil Labels.

The Design

The obverse portrays James Earl Fraser’s Native American Chief design, which depicts a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

The artistry includes the inscription “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

The reverse depicts a giant American Bison in an upstanding position, resembling a Buffalo. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

It also features the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
