2024 NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin - Exclusive Reagan Label

The Gold Buffalo Coin was the first 24k gold coin produced by the US Mint and introduced to the bullion market in 2006.

The coin weighs 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold, and the design reflects the nation’s heritage through the inspired James Earl Fraser’s Indian Head design, which dates back to 1913.

These coins pay tribute to the pivotal role of the 40th US President Ronald Reagan in American coinage history. They are encapsulated with an exclusive label featuring his portrait and signature.

Reagan fiercely advocated for coin collecting and bullion investing. He signed the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 and the Bullion Coin Act of 1985, which grounded the production of American Eagle Coins, and issued a Presidential Proclamation during his government, making the week of April 17 "National Coin Week."

Today, you can purchase, at SD Bullion, 2024 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins from those sold on the first day of issue in the US Mint, certified as MS-70 samples and sealed by the NGC with an Exclusive Ronald Reagan Facsimile Signature label with his portrait overlaying the Oval Office.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as perfect MS-70 coins by NGC;
  • Sealed with Exclusive NGC Ronald Reagan Facsimile Signature label;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Among those purchased on day #1 of public availability;
  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 pure gold;
  • Holds a face value of USD 50, backed by the US Government;
  • The obverse showcases the Native American Chief;
  • The reverse features the American Bison or the Buffalo.

The Design

The obverse features James Earl Fraser’s inspired Native American Chief design. It consists of a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons.

The inscriptions “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, complete the image.

The giant American Bison on the reverse has an upstanding depiction on the left side, covering most of the surface, resembling a Buffalo. Hence, the coin’s moniker.

The engravings on the design read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin

Coin grading services like NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, depending on their condition.

MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin that shows no visible flaws.

“First Day of Issue,” according to NGC, is a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
