2024 1/2 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin

The Austrian Mint introduced the 1 oz Gold Philharmonics in the market in 1989, but it only started producing ½ oz Gold Philharmonic Coins in 1994, broadening the series to include fractional sizes.

For those who appreciate the beauty and value of the Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins, besides the 1 oz Gold flagship, fractional-sized coins are essential to maintain a complete collection. This is the reason why enthusiasts worldwide look forward to each annual strike of the Austrian Mint.

And investors who want to acquire some physical gold bullion to diversify their assets, the Austrian Gold Philharmonic may be a pleasant and valuable choice since it is 999.9 pure and holds a legal tender and monetary denomination fully backed by the Austrian government.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains ½ oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition;
  • Legal tender status and face value of 50 Euros, guaranteed by Austria;
  • First released in 1994, after the standard 1 oz counterpart;
  • 31st strike of the ½ oz coin;
  • The obverse showcases the Golden Hall Pipe Organ;
  • The reverse features eight classic instruments.

The Design

Inspired by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfen created the designs of the series.

The obverse features the pipe organ settled in the Golden Hall of Vienna or the Musikverein. The image depicts the organ that substituted the one destroyed during the war, maintaining its authentic traces.

The information inscribed in German on the obverse border refers to the country and year of issuance, the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value.

The reverse features eight essential classical instruments to the Vienna Orchestra. The ones depicted are violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. The Orchestra’s name lies on the upper rim.

The Vienna Orchestra

The Vienna Philharmonics is one of the most renowned orchestras worldwide. Each member undergoes a rigid selection process, including skills evaluations, to keep their high-quality standard.

The origin of the orchestra dates back to approximately 1842, with Otto Nicolai. The German Maestro founded the Philharmonic Academy as an independent institution based on the members’ democratic decisions.

Traditionally, every January 1st since 1941, the Orchestra presents the Vienna New Year’s Concert honoring the Strauss family, an internationally expected event for classical music admirers.
